Pitești Prison (Historic Site)

The former Pitești Prison is one of the most significant — and disturbing — sites of communist-era repression in Romania. Between December 1949 and September 1951, it was the location of the "Pitești Experiment," a programme of extreme psychological torture and forced re-education carried out on political prisoners. The methods used here were among the most brutal in the Soviet bloc, and the experiment has been the subject of historical inquiry ever since.

The prison itself is no longer a tourist attraction per se, but the site carries considerable weight for anyone interested in Romania's communist history. A memorial commemorates the victims. Understanding what happened here helps explain both the silence that surrounded Romanian history during the Ceaușescu era and the trauma that surfaced after 1989.

story: "The 'Pitești Experiment' required prisoners to torture one another — the aim was to break them so completely that they would become willing enforcers against fellow inmates. Survivors described it as unlike anything else in Eastern Europe's gulag history."
