The old military foundry on the southern edge of town, established by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza in 1864 and one of the first industrial complexes of the modern Romanian state. The red-brick buildings, now partly preserved, are an interesting industrial archaeology stop — and they share their grounds with the garrison where Ceaușescu was executed.
Most of the site is closed to general visitors; some buildings have been converted to galleries and event spaces and can be visited on guided tours arranged through the town. The contrast between the optimistic 1860s foundation and the grim 1989 history that ended in the same compound is part of the visit.
