Dealu Monastery

Six kilometres north of Târgoviște on a low hill (dealu means hill), a fortified monastery founded in 1431 and rebuilt in stone in 1500 by Radu cel Mare. The church, with its carved twin spires and unusual stone facade work, is one of the most distinctive monastic buildings in Wallachia.

The site doubles as a memorial to Michael the Brave, whose head is buried here. The cloister has been a monastery for monks, a girls' school, a military training college, and a Romanian Orthodox novitiate at different times in its long history. A taxi from Târgoviște costs about 30 lei each way.

A story
The monastery's church holds the severed head of Mihai Viteazul — Michael the Brave — the Wallachian prince who in 1600 briefly united Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania for the first time. After his assassination the next year, the head was rescued from the field by a faithful captain and brought here for burial. The skull is sealed under a marble slab in the nave.
