Bojnice

Small central Slovak town anchored by a turreted castle, thermal baths, and the country’s oldest zoo.

Bojnice is a small town in central Slovakia, adjacent to Prievidza, and one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. The draw is Bojnice Castle, a fairy-tale pile of turrets and towers that looks like it belongs in a picture book — it is the most visited castle in Slovakia and regularly hosts a spring festival of ghosts and legends.

Below the castle, the town has pleasant thermal baths fed by natural hot springs, and the Bojnice Zoo, the oldest in the country. All three attractions are within easy walking distance of each other, making Bojnice an easy day trip from Bratislava or a stop on the way through central Slovakia.

When to Go

Bojnice is a year-round destination but is busiest in summer, when the castle, zoo, and thermal baths all operate full hours. The International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits at the castle, held in late April or early May, is the event most visitors come specifically to see — theatrical performances, costumed figures, and atmospheric lighting make it one of the most distinctive castle festivals in Slovakia.

Winter visits are quieter but the castle stays open, and the thermal baths are especially pleasant when it is cold outside. Spring and early autumn offer the best combination of manageable crowds and good weather for outdoor sightseeing.
