Slaščičarna Šmon (Park Hotel)

The original kremna rezina, served since 1953

The Hotel Park café in the centre of town is the original home of Bled's most famous food — the kremna rezina. The recipe was invented here in 1953 by pastry chef Ištvan Lukačević and has been served essentially unchanged ever since. The lakeside terrace fills up in summer afternoons; the cake is best eaten with a strong espresso.

The café also sells excellent coffee and a wider Slovenian-Austrian pastry repertoire — apple strudel, prekmurska gibanica, gorenjska potica. A reliable refuelling stop midway through the lake circuit.

A story
Bled's signature cake was invented in 1953 by Ištvan Lukačević, the Hotel Park's pastry chef. The recipe is now a registered geographical speciality: a 7 cm square of crisp golden puff pastry, a layer of warm vanilla custard, a layer of vanilla-laced whipped cream, a second pastry top dusted with icing sugar. Roughly 12 million have been served from this counter since.
