Parenzana Cycle Trail

A 123-kilometre cycle and walking path that follows the abandoned bed of the Parenzana narrow-gauge railway from Trieste to Poreč through three countries. The Slovenian section, around 32 km in total, is the most accessible from Izola: head east towards Koper or west towards Strunjan and Piran, with the trail crossing limestone tunnels, viaducts over small valleys, and stretches of olive grove that have not changed much in a hundred years.

Bikes can be rented from several shops near the harbour. The path is flat by definition (a railway grade), well-signposted, and pleasant in any season — although summer afternoons can be hot. A full day's ride from Izola will easily reach Piran and back; serious cyclists can do the full route in three days.

A story
The Parenzana was a narrow-gauge railway that ran between Trieste and Poreč in Croatia from 1902 to 1935 — closed early in the Mussolini era and never rebuilt. After the war the line was forgotten, the tracks were pulled up, and the route reverted to scrub. In the 2000s the three countries the line crossed (Italy, Slovenia, Croatia) agreed to convert the entire 123-kilometre route into a single shared cycle path.
