Strunjan Nature Reserve

A 430-hectare protected area straddling the peninsula between Izola and Piran, with the only undeveloped stretch of natural coastline in Slovenia. The Strunjan Cliffs — pale grey flysch dropping eighty metres straight into the sea — are the dramatic centrepiece, and a coastal path runs along their top from the eastern edge of Izola all the way to Piran. Inland, the reserve covers olive groves, vineyards, and the brackish Stjuža lagoon, which is rich in birdlife.

The reserve is best as a half-day walk: about three hours one way, ideally returning by bus or by water taxi. Bring water and a hat in summer; there is no shade along the cliffs.

A story
The Strunjan cliffs are the highest flysch sea-cliffs on the entire Adriatic — 80 metres of crumbling sandstone and marl dropping straight to the water. They are also some of the least stable: every few winters a major rockfall reshapes the coastline, and the path along the top is occasionally rerouted.
