A short, steep hike from the western end of the lake brings you to the Savica, an unusual A-shaped waterfall that splits in two as it tumbles 78 metres down a limestone cliff. The bus from Ribcev Laz drops you at the trailhead car park; from there it is a 25-minute walk up several hundred shallow stone steps to the viewing platform. The path is well-built but unrelenting — proper shoes help.
The waterfall has special status in Slovenia: it is the literary setting for the country's most famous epic poem and the official source of the River Sava, which crosses half the country before joining the Danube in Belgrade. The pool below the falls is a startling pale turquoise. Try to come in the morning before the tour buses arrive.
