The Castillo de Colomares is one of the strangest buildings on the Costa del Sol — a private monument to Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the Americas, built between 1987 and 1994 by a returning Spanish physician on a hillside above Arroyo de la Miel. It crams Byzantine domes, Gothic spires, Romanesque arches, Mudéjar tilework, and pseudo-pre-Columbian carvings into about 1,500 square metres of pure folly.
Inside, the rooms are filled with reliefs, statues, and inscriptions narrating the story of Columbus, the conquistadors, and the indigenous peoples of the Americas. The Guinness Book of Records lists it as the world's smallest church (the chapel measures about 1.96 square metres). It is open daily for a small entrance fee and is hands down the most interesting thing to look at in Benalmádena.
