Benalmádena is, on the face of it, a Costa del Sol resort built for beach holidays and family entertainment — but it has a surprising mix of off-script attractions. The hilltop pueblo is a proper Andalusian village; there is a full-sized Tibetan stupa in the hills; and on the seafront an eccentric private monument to Christopher Columbus mashes together Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, and Moorish styles. Mix the obvious (the marina, the beaches, the cable car) with one or two of these and the place stops feeling generic.
