Castle Ruins of Estepona

15th-century Moorish castle ruins with views over the town and coast

The ruins of Estepona's Moorish castle stand on the hill above the old town. The fortification dates from the 15th century and was built during the period of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada; it was taken by the forces of Ferdinand and Isabella during the Reconquista in 1456. The walls and a single tower survive, along with a small collection of archaeological finds displayed nearby.

The ruins themselves are not extensive, but the climb is worth it for the views down over the whitewashed rooftops to the marina and the sea, with the Strait of Gibraltar visible on clear days and the outline of the African coast beyond. The adjacent Parque Arqueológico holds a small display of ceramics and objects from the castle's excavations. Entry is free.
