A celebrated summer walk straight up the bed of the Chíllar river, which carves a narrow gorge through the limestone of the Sierra Almijara behind Nerja. Walkers wade and scramble upstream through shallow water for several kilometres — a refreshing antidote to the August heat.
Park at the Fábrica de la Luz on the edge of town and follow the river. The first section is gentle; further upstream the gorge narrows dramatically (Los Cahorros). Wear water shoes or old trainers — the riverbed is rocky — and bring water and a snack. A four to six hour round trip depending on how far up you go.
