Laguardia's medieval walls are largely intact and form a clear perimeter around the old town. Walking them gives the best sense of the village's defensive logic and the finest views over the Rioja Alavesa plain and its sea of vineyards. The two most prominent towers are the Torre Abacial (the abbot's tower, attached to Santa María de los Reyes) and the Torre del Rey (King's Tower) at the northern end of the village. Both can be seen from outside; the Torre del Rey is the taller of the two and the more photographed from the surrounding vineyards. The main gates — Puerta de Santa Engracia and Puerta de Páganos — retain their medieval stonework.
