The oldest part of Las Palmas, founded in 1478 and largely intact. The neighbourhood is compact enough to walk in an hour, but there is enough to look at — carved balconies, shaded courtyards, colonial mansions, the cathedral square — to fill an afternoon. It feels genuinely lived-in rather than museumified: people still work and shop here, and there are cafés and small restaurants among the cultural institutions. Come on a weekend morning when the streets are quiet.
