The lighthouse at the northern tip of Puerto de la Cruz has guided ships along Tenerife's rocky north coast since the 19th century. It stands on a small volcanic headland just west of the old harbour, and the walk out to it along the seafront is one of the town's more pleasant short strolls — the path passes the rocky natural pools where locals swim and the waves break dramatically on the lava shelves in rough weather.
The lighthouse itself is still active, though not open to visitors. The headland around it offers good views back over the harbour and the seafront, and in winter the whale-watching boats pass close by here.
