Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses)

The Hanging Houses are the defining image of Cuenca — a row of 14th- and 15th-century timber-framed buildings cantilevered dramatically over the Huécar gorge, their wooden balconies projecting out over thin air. From the San Pablo footbridge opposite, the effect is extraordinary: the houses appear to grow directly from the cliff face. Inside one of them is the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art. The exterior is best photographed from the bridge in the early morning when the light catches the gorges.
