Cuenca Cathedral

The Cathedral of Saint Mary and Saint Julian dominates the Plaza Mayor with a façade that blends Norman-Gothic and early Spanish Gothic styles — unusual in a country that went straight from Romanesque to a later, more ornate Gothic. Construction began in the 12th century after Alfonso VIII retook Cuenca from the Moors, and the building incorporates some of the oldest Gothic stonework in Spain. The interior features abstract stained glass by the artist Gustavo Torner and wrought iron screens (rejas) of high quality. The treasury holds a small collection of Byzantine diptychs.
