Museu dels Volcans

The Volcano Museum is the place to start a visit to the Garrotxa. Housed in the Torre Castanys, a Modernista mansion set in the Jardí Botànic on the southern edge of Olot, it explains the geological history of the area, the kind of eruptions that built the cones (small Strombolian events, not the catastrophic kind), and the seismology of north-east Catalonia — including the Olot earthquake of 1427-28, which destroyed much of the medieval town.

The displays are practical and well-pitched at non-specialists. A small earthquake simulator and a working seismograph give children something to play with, and the upper floor of the museum doubles as a natural history collection covering the fauna of the volcanic zone. The Jardí Botànic outside is worth combining with the visit — it has a good collection of plants from the lava fields.
