Santa Margarida Volcano

Santa Margarida is the most photogenic of the Garrotxa volcanoes. The crater, almost perfectly circular and 350 metres across, has filled with grass over the millennia, and at the centre stands the small Romanesque chapel of Santa Margarida — built in the 11th century, destroyed by the 1428 earthquake, and rebuilt afterwards.

The rim is reached by a short, easy walk from the Can Serra car park, and the path then drops into the crater to the chapel — one of the great peculiar experiences of Catalan walking, since you are standing inside an old volcano. The crater fills with mist in early autumn mornings, and the chapel emerging from the cloud is one of the iconic images of the Garrotxa.
