Central Market

The Mercat Central de Sabadell is the main covered market, built in the late 1920s and still functioning as a daily food market. The building is a good example of early twentieth-century Catalan market architecture — iron and glass construction with decorative ceramic details, designed both to provide the ventilation that a fresh-produce market requires and to give the city a civic landmark worth the investment.

Inside, the market sells fresh produce, meat, fish, and cheese in the Catalan tradition. Vendors are regulars who have held their stalls for years. The market is busiest in the morning and closes by early afternoon. Going on a Saturday morning, when the selection is widest and the atmosphere most lively, is recommended.

A story
The Mercat Central was built between 1927 and 1930 to designs by the municipal architect Jeroni Martorell, a pupil of Domènech i Montaner who worked in the Noucentisme style. It replaced an earlier open-air market that had served the city since the medieval period. The building's iron structure and decorative tilework reflect the Catalan determination to make even utilitarian infrastructure beautiful.
