S'Agaró

A walkable headland of luxurious 1920s villas just north of Sant Feliu, set in pine woods on a low cliff with two fine sand-and-rock beaches (Sant Pol and Sa Conca) at either end. The Camí de Ronda runs the length of the headland and is open to the public — anyone can walk it, though the villas above are private.

The Hostal de la Gavina, opened in 1932 and one of Spain's first luxury hotels, sits at the heart of the estate. The garden suburb was the favourite Costa Brava resort of Salvador Dalí, who lived for years up the coast at Port Lligat. A short walk or a 5-minute drive from Sant Feliu.

A story
The whole S'Agaró estate was designed in the 1920s by the architect Rafael Masó as a private Modernista garden suburb, with all houses built in a coordinated late-Catalan-Modernist style. Hemingway wrote part of The Old Man and the Sea here in 1956, staying at the Hostal de la Gavina, which is still in business at the heart of the estate.
