Sitges Film Festival

Europe's biggest fantasy and horror film festival, every October

The Sitges Film Festival, running for ten days every October, has been the major international event on the genre-cinema calendar since 1968. It draws thousands of fans and industry professionals, sells out hotels for months in advance, and gives the otherwise summer-oriented town its most concentrated cultural week of the year.

Films screen at the Auditori Meliá Hotel and several smaller venues in and around the centre. Tickets and accreditations sell quickly; check sitgesfilmfestival.com for programme and dates. Even if you're not attending screenings, the town in festival week is worth visiting for the atmosphere alone.

A story
Since 1968 the Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic has been the world's most important showcase for fantasy, horror, and science-fiction cinema — the place where Dario Argento, George A. Romero, Guillermo del Toro, and Quentin Tarantino have all walked the red carpet. For ten days every October the town's small cinemas screen back-to-back midnight movies and the old quarter fills with critics, directors, and an unusually enthusiastic genre-film audience.
