Torre de Espantaperros

Octagonal Almohad watchtower crowning the Alcazaba

The Almohad watchtower at the southern corner of the Alcazaba, built in the late 12th century and the tallest of the fortress's surviving structures. Octagonal in plan with a Mudéjar belfry added in the 16th century, it is one of the few intact Almohad military towers in Spain — a sibling of the more famous Giralda in Seville, which was raised by the same dynasty around the same time.

The name — literally 'dog-scarer' — comes from the bell that once hung in the upper chamber, used to summon the city's defenders. It can be climbed on weekends for views over the rooftops, the Guadiana valley and across to Portugal.
