Atrio

Atrio is the finest restaurant in Extremadura and one of the best in Spain, holding two Michelin stars. It occupies a purpose-built contemporary hotel building inside the Ciudad Monumental, its glass-and-stone architecture a deliberate contrast to the surrounding medieval palaces. The kitchen, run by Toño Pérez, is rooted in Extremaduran ingredients — Ibérico pork, game, local vegetables and cheese — interpreted with considerable technical ambition.

The tasting menu runs to twelve or more courses and represents a serious commitment of time and money (around €200 per person without wine). The wine list is extraordinary — one of the most celebrated in Spain, with rare Spanish bottles alongside serious Burgundy and Bordeaux. If you are interested in Spanish wine, the list alone is worth the visit.

A more accessible way to experience Atrio is to book a table in the adjacent bar, which serves a shorter menu of Extremaduran dishes and snacks at prices that are ambitious but not extravagant. Either way, reservations are essential.
