Mercado Central de Pontevedra

Covered market with fresh Galician produce and excellent seafood stalls

The central market of Pontevedra sits at the north end of the old town and is the best place to understand what Galician cooking is built on. The seafood stalls are the highlight: percebes (goose barnacles), zamburiñas (small scallops), navajas (razor clams), and whole octopus in season. Galician beef and the region's cured meats occupy another section, alongside stalls selling local cheeses, peppers, and Albariño wine from the nearby Rías Baixas vineyards.

The building itself is an iron-and-glass market hall from the early 20th century, functional rather than architectural, but the interior atmosphere on a busy Saturday morning is reason enough to visit. Go early — most stalls are done by midday. The market is closed on Sundays.
