Portonovo

Working fishing village a 20-minute walk west of Sanxenxo

Portonovo is the fishing village that Sanxenxo used to be before tourism arrived. It has been absorbed into the same municipality but kept a distinct character: a small working port with a fish market, narrow streets running back from the harbour, and a row of seafood restaurants along the quay. The whole village is walkable from Sanxenxo in about twenty minutes along the coastal promenade.

The fishing auction (the lonxa) is the engine of the local economy. Fish caught overnight is unloaded in the morning and sold in the late afternoon, and the restaurants along the front buy from it directly. This is the practical reason the seafood is so good here: short supply chain, daily turnover. Eat lunch in Portonovo and dinner in Sanxenxo, or — better — do both meals in Portonovo.
