Silgar Beach

The main town beach, a 750-metre crescent in the heart of Sanxenxo

Praia de Silgar is the urban beach of Sanxenxo — a gently curving 750-metre strip of light sand fronting the town, with a promenade, a row of cafés and bars, and the marina at one end. It is sheltered from the Atlantic by the shape of the bay, so the water is calmer than the open-ocean beaches further west. In July and August it is densely packed; in June and September you can usually find a spot without much trouble.

The Blue Flag has flown here for decades and the lifeguard service is full season. The promenade behind the beach is the spine of the town's social life — evening strolls, pre-dinner drinks at the terraces, slow ice-cream wandering with the family. The view from the eastern end across to the Ons Islands and Tambo Island in the middle of the ría is one of the better things to look at while you're here.
