Right next to the Prado, Madrid's Royal Botanic Garden dates to 1755 and holds around 5,000 plant species arranged across three terraced levels. Spring is the best time to visit, when the rose garden and the medicinal plant beds are in full bloom, but the greenhouse collection — tropical and desert plants — rewards a visit year-round. The garden is compact enough to cover in an hour, making it a natural break between museum visits. Autumn and winter are quieter and less colourful; you might prefer Retiro Park in those months.
