Casa de Lope de Vega

The restored 17th-century town house of the playwright Félix Lope de Vega, the most prolific dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age — supposedly the author of around 1,500 plays, of which some 400 survive. He lived here from 1610 until his death in 1635 and the house has been preserved with much of its original furniture, a courtyard garden, and the small chapel where he held services after taking holy orders late in life.

The visit is by free 45-minute guided tour, in Spanish (with summary in English available). The contrast between the cramped Golden Age interior and the modern street outside is the experience. The house sits on Calle de Cervantes — and ironically, Cervantes himself lived around the corner, in a house long since demolished. Closed Mondays. Reservations advisable in summer.
