The cathedral hides behind a stiff neoclassical facade added in the 18th century by the architect Ventura Rodríguez, but step through the entrance and the medieval interior opens up. The 14th and 15th-century Gothic cloister is the real prize: one of the finest in Europe, with delicate tracery in the arches and expressive carved figures in the corbels and keystones.
The Diocesan Museum inside the cathedral holds sacred art, reliquaries, and liturgical objects from across Navarre. The cathedral sits on a high point of the old town, close to the old Roman forum — it has occupied the same commanding position for nearly a thousand years.
