Värnamo

Småland design town near Store Mosse, with modern craft, furniture history, and bogland walks.

Värnamo is a small Småland town with more personality than its size suggests. It sits just off the E4 in southern Sweden, close to forests, lakes, and the wide wetland of Store Mosse National Park.

The town's best reason to stop is design. Vandalorum brings contemporary art and craft into a building based on Renzo Piano's barn-like concept, while the Bruno Mathsson Center keeps the work of one of Sweden's great modernist furniture designers close to the house and workshop where he grew up.

Värnamo is not a big-city destination, and that is part of the appeal. Give it a day if you are crossing Småland: walk Apladalen, look at chairs and glass walls, then head into the bog country where boardwalks and bird towers make southern Sweden feel suddenly remote.

Eating Out

Värnamo is better for simple local meals than destination dining. Look for town-centre cafes and casual restaurants, with Pizzeria Chaplin the most distinctive stop if you want a place with a real local story.

Getting Around

The centre of Värnamo is walkable. Apladalen and the Bruno Mathsson Center are close to town, while Vandalorum sits south of the centre and is easiest by bike, bus, taxi, or car. Store Mosse National Park is outside town; check bus times carefully or drive.

Getting There

Värnamo is on the E4, the main north-south road through southern Sweden, and on railway lines linking it with Jönköping, Växjö, Halmstad, and Nässjö. Trains and regional buses are useful if you are moving through Småland, but Store Mosse and the smaller sights are easiest with a car.
