The Musegg Wall is Lucerne's medieval fortification, running for 870 metres along the north edge of the old town. Built between 1386 and 1408, it is one of the best-preserved medieval city walls in Switzerland. Nine towers survive along the wall, all in different states and with different histories — some are open to climb, others are private residences.
Three of the towers are publicly accessible in summer: the Männliturm, the Luegislandturm, and the Schirmerturm. The walk along the top of the wall between them gives the best views over the old town rooftops to the lake and mountains beyond. The Zytturm, with its fish-scale painted clock face, is visible from much of the city and still strikes one minute before every other clock in Lucerne — a privilege granted in 1535 that remains in force.
