Svit Kavy — World of Coffee — on Rynok Square is one of Lviv's best-known cafes and a good introduction to the city's coffee culture. The espresso is excellent, the cakes are made in-house, and the location on the corner of the main square means you can watch the city go past while you drink. It gets busy at peak times but the turnover is quick.
Lviv's claim to have hosted the first coffeehouse in Central Europe is disputed but not entirely implausible — the city was a major trading hub on the route between the Ottoman Empire and northern Europe, and coffee was certainly known here early. Whatever the historical truth, the modern cafe scene takes the heritage seriously: there are dozens of good coffee shops in the old town, and the standard is consistently high.
