Gasova Lampa

Gasova Lampa (Gas Lamp) is a well-regarded Ukrainian restaurant in the old town, housed in a cellar space decorated with antiques and period objects from the 19th century. The menu focuses on traditional Galician Ukrainian cooking — borshch with pampushky (garlic rolls), varenyky with various fillings, slow-cooked meat dishes — prepared with more care than the tourist restaurants on Rynok Square. Prices are modest by any Western standard.

The restaurant is popular with both locals and visitors and can be busy at dinner; arriving early or booking ahead is sensible. The wine list focuses on Ukrainian and Georgian wines, both of which are worth trying. The setting, with its low vaulted ceilings and candlelit atmosphere, is comfortable rather than theatrical.
