Derby Gaol is a compact but atmospheric slice of local history. The old cells and prison stories pull Derby away from its usual engineering and cathedral narratives, into the rougher world of punishment, poverty, and public justice.
It is not a polished national museum, and that is part of the appeal. Go for the claustrophobic rooms, the local tales, and the sense that Derby's past included more than mills, railways, and respectable Georgian streets.
