Derby Market Hall

Derby Market Hall on the Eagle Market site has been a centre of city commerce since the Victorian era, though the current building is a 1960s replacement of an 1866 original. The indoor market runs Tuesday through Saturday and sells the full range of fresh produce, fabric, household goods, and street food that you would expect from a working market in an English Midlands city. It is not a tourist attraction in any formal sense, but it is one of the better surviving indoor markets in the East Midlands and gives a genuine sense of how the city functions.

The outdoor market on the Market Place, a short walk away, runs on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and stretches back centuries — Derby has held a market on this spot since the medieval period. The Guildhall arcade beside it is worth a look for its Victorian shopfront architecture.
