Downhill — also called the lower city or Wigford in older usage — is the commercial half of Lincoln, spread along the River Witham and the long axis of the High Street. The neighbourhood holds the Stonebow and Guildhall, the High Bridge with its tea room, Brayford Pool with its restaurants and the modern campus of the University of Lincoln, and the railway station.
The shopping is concentrated along the High Street and around the Cornhill Quarter — a mix of national chains, the Waterside Centre mall, and a smaller wedge of independents. Downhill comes into its own in the evenings, when the riverside bars and restaurants do most of the city's drinking trade. Less monumentally photogenic than Uphill but practical, walkable, and easier on the calves.
