Ellis Mill

Restored 18th-century tower windmill, the last of nine in Lincoln

Built in 1798, Ellis Mill is the last surviving working tower windmill in Lincoln — at one time the city had nine such mills perched along the breezy edge of the cliff to take advantage of the wind. The four-sail mill was operating commercially until 1900, then fell into ruin; it was restored in the 1970s by volunteers and now works at weekends, grinding stoneground wholemeal flour for sale on site.

The mill is at the northern end of the Bailgate quarter, with a small open area around it; on a working day the sails turn and a small museum on the ground floor explains the mechanism. Combine with a walk along the surviving city wall and Newport Arch. Open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in summer; admission by donation.
