The Arboretum, on the slope east of the cathedral quarter, is a fine Victorian public park designed by Edward Milner in 1872 and beautifully restored a decade ago after a long period of decline. The 22 acres include a bandstand, a serpentine lake with a Chinese-style bridge, an aviary, formal flower beds, and a long curving path lined with mature ornamental trees.
The park is free and open from dawn to dusk. The bandstand still hosts concerts on summer Sunday afternoons; the small café next to the lake serves tea and ice cream. A short walk from the cathedral square, downhill on the eastern side; combine with a return walk up Pottergate to St Anne's Bedehouses.
