The Collection brings together Lincolnshire's archaeological and fine-art museums under a single roof on Danes Terrace, halfway up the hill between the High Street and the cathedral. The archaeology galleries cover the county from prehistoric flints through extensive Roman material from Lindum Colonia, Saxon-period grave goods, and a particularly fine medieval collection. The Usher Gallery, next door and integrated into the same ticket, holds 19th- and 20th-century painting, decorative arts, and a notable Lincolnshire-themed collection (Tennyson, Peter de Wint).
The building is a modern purpose-designed museum that has won architectural awards. Free entry to the permanent collection; charges for occasional special exhibitions. Allow two hours.
