Guildhall and Stonebow

Medieval city gate and council chamber on the High Street

The Stonebow is a 15th-century gateway that marks the southern boundary of the medieval walled city, with the Lincoln Guildhall built directly on top of it as a first-floor council chamber. The structure replaced an earlier Roman gate on the same site (a fragment of which is preserved inside) and has been the meeting place of Lincoln City Council from medieval times to the present day — one of the oldest councils in continuous occupation of the same room anywhere in England.

The Guildhall houses the city's collection of civic regalia, including the Mote Horn (a 14th-century summoning instrument said to be the oldest piece of civic plate in the country) and several medieval maces. Free guided tours are offered on Friday and Saturday mornings; otherwise visitors can see the building from the street.
