The Bishop's Palace Gardens lie inside the old city walls just south of the cathedral. They are one of the loveliest small gardens in southern England — partly walled, with old herbaceous borders, a knot garden, and a lawn opening onto the south side of the cathedral close. Free to enter, open during daylight hours.
There is a small productive garden, occasional events, and a lavender hedge that draws bees through the summer. A picnic spot of the first order.
