Pallant House Gallery

Pallant House Gallery houses one of the most important collections of modern British art outside London, ranging from Walter Sickert and the Camden Town Group through Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore and Patrick Heron to Peter Blake and the present day. The gallery occupies a fine Queen Anne townhouse — Pallant House itself, built 1712 — together with a sympathetic modern extension that doubled the display space when it opened in 2006.

Temporary exhibitions are usually strong and run alongside the permanent collection. The cafe in the modern wing is among the better lunch options in the city.

A story
The core of the collection was donated in 1977 by Walter Hussey, the cathedral's Dean — a clergyman who quietly assembled one of the most discerning private collections of modern British art in the country, including works by Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and Ceri Richards, often acquired before the artists became fashionable.
