Weald and Downland Living Museum

The Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton, six miles north of Chichester, is a 40-acre open-air museum of rescued historic buildings from across south-east England. Over 50 timber-framed houses, mills, barns, schools, and workshops — some dating from the thirteenth century — have been dismantled from sites under threat and rebuilt in a wooded valley in the South Downs.

The buildings are furnished and inhabited by costumed interpreters; a working watermill grinds flour, a Tudor kitchen turns out lunch, and the heavy horses pull the plough on weekends. A full day is easy to fill, particularly in autumn or winter when the chimneys smoke.

A story
The museum is the open-air location used by the BBC for The Repair Shop, filmed in a 17th-century cart shed in the centre of the site. Visitors regularly arrive expecting to find Jay Blades at work; the museum politely explains that filming only happens for a few weeks a year.
