The Bargate is the grandest survivor of Southampton's medieval defences — a two-storey gatehouse built around 1180 that once straddled the main road into town. It stood at the junction of High Street and Above Bar Street for 750 years before the road was rerouted around it in 1932. The guildhall on its upper floor has been a court, a prison, and an exhibition space. Today it stands in the middle of a pedestrianised square, free to admire from the outside.
