A surprisingly substantial municipal art gallery, with one of the best provincial collections in England. The strength is in twentieth-century British art — Stanley Spencer, Patrick Heron, Howard Hodgkin, Bridget Riley — but the Victorian and Edwardian rooms include strong Burne-Jones and a famous Holman Hunt. The medieval and renaissance rooms have a few impressive set pieces, including a fine Allegri.
Temporary exhibitions run alongside the permanent collection, often loans from larger London institutions. Free to enter; closed Mondays. The gallery sits in the same Civic Centre block as the SeaCity Museum and the Guildhall — easy to combine.
