The largest working passenger-carrying steamship in Europe, kept in working order by a preservation trust and operating short summer cruises out of Southampton. Built in 1955 at the Lobnitz yard in Renfrew for the Glasgow sewage department — the function gave the boat its only commercial purpose for 30 years — the Shieldhall was saved from the scrappers in 1988 and brought south.
Voyages run on selected weekends in summer, normally three to six hours around Southampton Water and the Solent. Passengers can tour the working engine room and steer the wheelhouse. Tickets are sold through the preservation society; the trips fill up. When not at sea, the ship is open for guided tours by arrangement.
