Titanic Musicians' Memorial

Memorial to the eight musicians who played until the ship went down

A small granite memorial fountain on the corner of Andrews Park, commemorating the eight musicians who played throughout the Titanic's sinking. The original 1913 monument was destroyed in the Blitz; the current replacement was unveiled in 1990 on the same spot. The list of names — Wallace Hartley, Theodore Brailey, Roger Bricoux, John Frederick Preston Clarke, John Law Hume, Georges Krins, Percy Cornelius Taylor, and John Wesley Woodward — runs around the base.

The memorial is small and easy to walk past. Combined with the Engineers' Memorial just metres away, it makes a quiet pendant to the SeaCity exhibits. Free, always open.

A story
The eight musicians of the Titanic band continued playing on the deck as the ship sank, supposedly ending with the hymn 'Nearer, My God, to Thee'. None of them survived. Wallace Hartley, the leader, was a Liverpudlian; the others came from Southampton, Liverpool, and London.
