Mayflower Steps

Barbican quayside monument marking the Pilgrim Fathers' 1620 departure

A stone archway and plaque on the Barbican quayside mark the spot where the Pilgrim Fathers boarded the Mayflower on 6 September 1620. The monument is modest — a simple portico above the old harbour steps — but the location is atmospheric, surrounded by the same cobbled lanes and timber-framed buildings the passengers would have seen. There's a small visitor centre nearby with the departure story.
