Prysten House

Plymouth's oldest house, a 15th-century merchant's courtyard beside St Andrew's

Prysten House is a Grade I listed medieval building dating from around 1498, making it one of the oldest domestic buildings in Plymouth. It stands just beside St Andrew's Church and was built as a merchant's house around a small courtyard — the kind of structure that was common in prosperous Tudor ports but has almost entirely disappeared.

The building survived both the Dissolution and the Blitz and is now used as a heritage centre with exhibitions on Plymouth's history. The courtyard is a rare and peaceful spot in the middle of the city, and the medieval construction — including original windows and roofline — is visible and well-explained. Small entry fee; often overlooked by visitors who walk straight past to the Barbican.
